Can Jesus be relevant today?

Headlines in the news for weeks now have concerned money: credit crunch, banks failing, people losing their jobs, share prices tumbling. And we are talking about Jesus. Doesn't that seem a little irrelevant?

No! The first word I used above was money. And Jesus had a great deal to say about money. He warned us against greed, and told us that we can never be sure of financial security. He encouraged us to help those who have less than we do, and to seek justice for those who have been wrongly treated. But he also gave us a message of great hope, and of deep security.

The question is, do we believe Him?

We hear in these days, words of advice from politicians, bankers, financial experts, journalists, and the man in the street. Who are we to trust? Most of us will answer, "none of them!" So what about Jesus? The real question is about whether or not we believe that what he says, and the life he lived, can be trusted. If they can, then he has something hugely relevant and liberating to say to us.

It's a message about God's nature; God being Father-like in the best possible way, God seeking to draw us into a relationship with Himself, and God giving us the deepest possible sense of acceptance and peace and security, as we give ourselves into His care.

For me, believing in Jesus makes today liveable, whatever it holds. And it makes tomorrow faceable, whatever it may bring.

That is why we are speaking so much in these days from the Gospels and the message of Jesus.

Right through November and December this will be our theme, taking words of Jesus, and applying them to our lives. Why not come and listen to what He has to say?
