Martin is having a day off today, so please welcome guest blogger – or blogette? Ellen Andrews, Children and Family Worker here at BBC
I spoke on the phone to one of the church family earlier this week and asked her how she was. Her answer was great, but also a little challenging. “I’m fine, I have my bible.” Oh, that I would be so easily content!
These wise words starting me thinking. While the world might be stockpiling food, medicines and whatever else they see as ‘essentials’, we could be filling up on spiritual nourishment, stockpiling the true essential: Jesus – the bread of life.
This current time is undeniably difficult and challenging in lots of ways, but it’s also a time of great opportunity. As Martin has mentioned previously on his blog, many of us will have a lot of extra time on our hands and while this may not be our first choice, let’s see it as a gift from God, extra time to spend with him, in his word and in prayer.
If you have never joined in with the Bible in One Year -Alpha app, then how about starting now. What’s so brilliant about it is that you can click on a speaker icon and then the scriptures will be read to you and Nicky Gumbel will chat through his commentary. I find this a great way to hear the familiar New Testament scriptures in a new light and also the often more challenging Old Testament books with helpful thoughts as they are skilfully linked together.
